Armed Bloomfield Suspect Taken into Custody

Bloomfield Police Officers were able to quickly disarm the subject and place him under arrest without incident. The suspect was identified as 35-year-old Daniel Utley of Bloomfield.

On the afternoon of October 27, 2020, Bloomfield Police Department and San Juan County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call in the 900 blocks of West Maple in Bloomfield, NM, regarding an armed subject. Bloomfield Police Officers were able to quickly disarm the subject and place him under arrest without incident. The suspect was identified as 35-year-old Daniel Utley of Bloomfield.

Bloomfield Police Department has had eight contacts with Mr. Utley in the past month. Four of which the subject was armed with various edged weapons; knives, swords, compound bow, and a hatchet. Mr. Utley continuously made statements to officers stating he wanted to commit suicide by cop. Each time officers were able to diffuse the situation.

Mr. Utley is also facing the following charges from previous incidents in the month:

•Criminal Damages to Property (over $1000) – 4th Degree Felony

•Larceny – Theft from a Building (500 but not more than $2500) – 4th Degree Felony

•Violation of Restraining Order Prohibiting Domestic Violence

The suspect was treated at San Juan Regional Medical Center for self-inflicted wounds and is currently being held at the San Juan County Detention Center. The victim in the incident was not harmed.

    The rescue effort also received substantial financial support, from various donors. This outside support significantly reduced the financial impact on local resources and ensured the operation did not place a major burden on San Juan County taxpayers.

  • Resident Dies after House Fire N. of Aztec

    Crews arrived to find a structure on fire and the occupant inside. ย Despite a quick response from fire crews and efforts by San Juan County Sheriffโ€™s Deputies, one occupant was removed from the structure by firefighters and transported to the hospital by San Juan Regional Medical Center EMS. The occupant was pronounced dead at the hospital.
