Contract Awarded for Pinon Hills extension

The Pinon Hills Boulevard Extension and Bridge project will provide a secondary traffic connection across the Animas River with the construction of a new roadway from New Mexico 516/East Main Street to the intersection of County Road 390/Wildflower Parkway and County Road 3900.

The City of Farmington has awarded AUI the $36,716,000 contract for the construction of East Piñon Hills Boulevard.
The Pinon Hills Boulevard Extension and Bridge project will provide a secondary traffic connection across the Animas River with the construction of a new roadway from New Mexico 516/East Main Street to the intersection of County Road 390/Wildflower Parkway and County Road 3900.
“A marvelous time for Farmington, New Mexico! The number one regional project is funded, through the bid process, and now awarded.” Community Works Director, David Sypher proclaimed. David Sypher added, “to date, the City has received over $40 million in grant funding and will likely receive more before the project is finished.” The project is expected to begin March 11, 2024 and is projected to last approximately 2 years.
“The Piñon Hills Boulevard Extension is a project that has been enthusiastically anticipated for over 30 years. It is an extraordinary opportunity to accomplish a multigenerational endeavor that will literally shape the future of our community,” City Manager, Rob Mayes said. “It’s a tangible expression of the perseverance of current and
past leadership, and our dedication to the quality of life for the residents and a continued commitment to fostering a thriving environment for businesses and families in Farmington” Mayes further stated.
The additional connection from north Farmington to south Farmington will provide several benefits to the community:

Quicker response times for emergency services
Help reduce traffic congestion
Reduced commute times
Creates new areas for residential and commercial development and encourages expansion of existing areas

The Farmington Metropolitan Planning Organization has also identified the Pinon Hills extension as a possible future freight corridor, further alleviating traffic congestion and mixed traffic in the heavily traveled business areas of Farmington.
“Piñon Hills Boulevard and bridge extension has been on the City’s Capital Improvement Project list since the 1990’s. This has been the top regional transportation project and we are excited to see it come to fruition. The Piñon Hills Boulevard Extension is not just a road; it's a pathway to the future, a testament to our resilience, and a source of pride for everyone who calls Farmington their home,” Mayor Nate Duckett said, echoing the spirit of progress.

Despite a quick response from fire crews and efforts by San Juan County Sheriff’s Deputies, one occupant was removed from the structure by firefighters and transported to the hospital by San Juan Regional Medical Center EMS. The occupant was pronounced dead at the hospital.
