KSJE Host Wins National Honor

Traci HalesVass, wins an honorable mention award for her interview with author James McGrath Morris. Since she started hosting “Write on Four Corners,” Traci Halesvass has interviewed over 200 authors, including Anne Hillerman, Craig Childs, Pam Houston, as well as James McGrath Morris. Morris wrote a biography of Tony Hillerman titled “A Life.”

Traci HalesVass, local radio host for KSJEs “Write on Four Corners,” author and retired professor of Creative writing wins an honorable mention award for her interview with author James McGrath Morris.  Halesvass was honored at the National Federation of Press Women Conference in Fargo, North Dakota in June 2022.

The interview also won first place in the 2022 New Mexico Press Women’s contest.

HalesVass retired from San Juan College in 2017 and started hosting the established “Write on Four Corners” show, where she interviews local and regional authors each Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. During her tenure at San Juan College, HalesVass started the One Book, One Community program, taught Creative Writing and other English classes. She has published short stories and collaborated in the publication of Into the West anthology with San Juan Writers.

  • Police Capture Driver from Fatal Hit & Run US 550 Crash

    The driver of the commercial vehicle, identified as 55-year-old Jasper Bunny of Farmington, sustained serious injuries. He was transported by helicopter to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The fleeing driver, identified as 34-year-old Crescencio Castro Baldazo, was located a short distance away near milepost 103. Citizens at the scene prevented him from leaving and reported that he appeared to be intoxicated.

Officers gave commands for Leon Quintana (27) to place his hands on his head and walk backward toward them. During the encounter, Mr. Quintana hesitated and shifted his movements while officers continued giving commands. He then produced a firearm and fired a shot toward officers, striking an officer’s patrol car. A second shot was also fired.

    A complex investigation began, tracking Ms. Salazar across multiple states with cooperation from several law enforcement agencies, including the U.S. Marshal’s Service, that concluded last week when Ms. Salazar was arrested on her warrant and the child was returned to New Mexico where he is now with Mr. West.

  • Navajo Nation agrees (again) to help fund N-36/NM 371 Intersection Improvements

    The agreement authorizes NDOT to transfer $2,790,647 to NMDOT to administer procurement and construction of the NM371/N36 Intersection Improvement Project. This long-needed project will include roadway widening and the installation of a traffic signal and lighting system designed to reduce accidents, improve traffic flow, and enhance overall public safety for residents, school buses, emergency responders, and travelers who rely on this heavily used corridor.

  • Racing Commission Approves SunRay Move to Clovis

    The move will not affect the 2026 racing season in San Juan County.  Live racing is scheduled for April 17 – May 24, 2026. San Juan County has previously said that McGee Park and the San Juan County Fairgrounds would not be impacted by any changes at the casino and horse racing track.
