Students Arrested after Pellet Incident

The investigation showed that the teacher was hit with a pellet that was flicked at her as opposed to being shot from a pellet gun. Deputies and Detectives found over 12 pellets throughout the classroom. 16 year-old Dominic Benally of Kirtland, was arrested and booked into San Juan County Juvenile Detention Center on Aggravated Battery on a School Official, Intervening with the Educational Process and Possession of alcohol by a minor. 15 year-old Darius Lee of Fruitland, was booked into San Juan County Juvenile Detention Center for Aggravated Battery on a School Official and Intervening

Today at 8:03 am, deputies responded to Kirtland High School in reference to a teacher being shot with a pellet gun during class.

The investigation showed that the teacher was hit with a pellet that was flicked at her as opposed to being shot from a pellet gun. Deputies and Detectives found over 12 pellets throughout the classroom.

16 year-old Dominic Benally of Kirtland, was arrested and booked into San Juan County Juvenile Detention Center on Aggravated Battery on a School Official, Intervening with the Educational Process and Possession of alcohol by a minor.

15 year-old Darius Lee of Fruitland, was booked into San Juan County Juvenile Detention Center for Aggravated Battery on a School Official and Intervening with the Educational Process.

 

From the Central Consolidated School District:

Kirtland Central High School was put on a preventative shelter-in-place at 7:57 a.m. Wednesday, May 18, 2016.

Our students and staff were safe and in class during the shelter-in-place.

Any student who showed up late to school was taken to their class.

The shelter-in-place was lifted at 10 a.m., and school resumed its normal schedule.

The school is sending a letter home to parents May 18, 2016 with this information.

  • Resident Dies after House Fire N. of Aztec

    Crews arrived to find a structure on fire and the occupant inside.  Despite a quick response from fire crews and efforts by San Juan County Sheriff’s Deputies, one occupant was removed from the structure by firefighters and transported to the hospital by San Juan Regional Medical Center EMS. The occupant was pronounced dead at the hospital.
