Gunshot Prompts Lockdown

Last year, a similar incident occurred and law enforcement contacted a citizen that was shooting at prairie dogs near our building. It is suspected that this could be a similar situation and we want to remind the community that it is illegal to discharge a firearm in the city limits of Aztec, as well as within 150 yards of a dwelling or building.

From the San Juan Co. Sheriff's Office:

At approximately 10:20am this morning, two detectives with the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office were in the west parking lot when they heard gun fire and a bullet impact the side of the building. All the government buildings in the area went into lockdown immediately. A team of Sheriff’s Office deputies and detectives searched the field west of the building and the lockdown was lifted after the area was cleared. Suspect Sought in July 4th Fatal Shooting

Deputies responded to reports of a shooting and located 18-year-old Elihue Vialpando, who had sustained fatal gunshot wounds. A second victim, Jack Chavez, suffered a gunshot wound to his leg and was transported to San Juan Regional Medical Center for treatment. Witness statements revealed Vialpando brandished a pistol and fired rounds earlier in the night, but based on the timeline of events and witness statements, did not support actions by Thomas Vigil.
Authorities Search for DWI Treatment Center Escapee

The suspect escaped during Sunday afternoon church services. He asked to go to the bathroom and never returned, immediately initiating a count and search of the facility. This is the first escape in the 31-year history of the jail-based treatment center.
